RØDE is giving its RØDECaster Video range a substantial upgrade — without requiring users to buy new hardware.
The new RØDECaster Video 1.4 firmware introduces a dedicated 4K Capture Mode, allowing the RØDECaster Video, Video S and Video Core to operate as multi-camera UHD capture and distribution systems.
Instead of primarily working as live production switchers, the consoles can now take multiple HDMI camera feeds and send each source individually over NDI at up to 4K30.
The standard RØDECaster Video can handle four UHD camera inputs, while the Video S and Video Core support three.
Each camera can be recorded separately
One of the most useful additions for creators is 4K ISO recording.
Every UHD camera source can be recorded as its own independent track directly to an external SSD in either H.264 or H.265.

That means a multi-camera podcast, interview or studio production can be recorded with clean individual camera files ready for editing later, rather than relying entirely on the live switch.
There is also a new Full HD Capture Mode for users who would rather prioritise frame rate, supporting multi-camera 1080p operation at 60fps.
There is a compromise, however.
To deliver the additional resolution and throughput required for 4K capture, some of the console’s live switching, keying, multi-camera scene and media features are reduced or simplified in this mode.
Users who need graphics, transitions, scenes and conventional live switching can simply return to the existing FHD Switching Mode.
RØDE’s audio and video systems get closer
RØDE is also expanding RØDECaster Sync.
Previously introduced with the RØDECaster Video Core, Sync can now be used with the RØDECaster Video and Video S as well.
Connect a RØDECaster Pro II or RØDECaster Duo through USB-C and the two devices effectively become a combined audio-and-video production environment.
The audio console’s faders, touchscreen, mute controls and SMART Pads can be used to control functions across the production, including video switching, scenes, media and overlays.
Premiere Pro users get a useful addition
Version 1.4 also adds OTIO timeline export for Adobe Premiere Pro, making it easier to reconstruct multi-camera productions inside an editing timeline.
That joins existing DaVinci Resolve EDL export support.
RØDE has also added audio input from compatible USB webcams and keyboard shortcuts for Scene Builder inside the RØDECaster App.
For existing owners, the important part is simple: RØDECaster Video 1.4 is a free update.
And rather than simply adding a handful of minor features, RØDE is effectively giving the hardware another production role — moving it beyond live switching into dedicated multi-camera 4K capture and distribution.
